Sounding Off – Cameron Hayley:
You were caught up in a wreck last year at Bristol, and finished 18th. That aside, you like that racetrack, you like short track racing, and I know you’ve had some success there in the K&N Series as well. Are you looking forward to getting back to BMS?
“Yeah, you know, I’ve had good runs every time I’ve gone to Bristol. I had a fast Toyota Tundra last year, had a fast car in K&N, and in K&N had a motor blow, and last year had a wreck in the truck. So again, these concrete tracks, same as Dover, I’ve had fast trucks, but I’ve just had bad luck. Hopefully we can turn that around this year.”
How tricky is Bristol?
“It’s different for sure, but I like having the options to the run the middle, to the top of the race track. A lot of short tracks are run right around the bottom, and it’s a lot of bumping and banging. Bristol is a lot of bumping and banging, but at least you can go bottom-middle-top, so that’s really good for us.”
You are half way through your sophomore season. How would you summarize the first half of 2016 so far from your seat?
“I’d like to break it up into two sections. I think that our speed is an A, I think we can get a little bit better but I think we’re right there. In terms of finishes, I think we’re pushing a D. We’ve just really struggled finishing. Whether it be blowing tires, people wrecking us, actually we’ve had everything go wrong. The three races we’ve had everything go right, we finished second and third. So, as long as we can have everything go right, we’re good, we just need to work on finishing.”
News & Notes:
- Chassis Chatter…The No. 13 ThorSport Racing team will unload chassis No. 37 for Wednesday night’s UNOH 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway (BMS). This is the same chassis that Hayley piloted at Dover International Speedway (19th), Iowa Speedway (3rd), and Eldora Speedway (7th) earlier this season.
- Thunder Valley Stats… Hayley has one start in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) (2015) and one start in the K&N Pro Series East (2014) at BMS.
- Chase Birth… Hayley tied his career-best finish with a runner-up showing in the series last stop at Pocono. The result moved him into the final spot for the NCWTS Chase, with four races left until the playoffs. Hayley is tied with Ben Kennedy in points, but holds the tie breaker because his season-high runner-up finish is better than Kennedy’s top showing of seventh at Iowa and Pocono.
- Rearview Mirror – Bristol… Hayley started ninth, was involved in an early accident, and finished 18th in his track debut at BMS in 2015.
- Race Rewind – Pocono… Making his second start at Pocono Raceway, Hayley started 10th, and finished second, a track-best for the sophomore driver. The solid result was his second top-five in two starts at the “Tricky Triangle.”
